 Baradari

One of the most important landmarks of Nawanshahr, it was a garden complex that dates back to more than 200 years. It is said that when Raja Ranjit Singh came from Lahore to meet the then British Governor of Punjab, he and his troops stayed at Baradari.

Baradari means "A room with 12 doors and is designed to allow the free draught of air through it. Persons of repute used it as a venue for formal and informal settings in hot weather". (Reference page 382 from the book, Events in the Court of Raja Ranjit Singh, published by the language department Punjab)

Layout: The Baradari of Nawanshahr enclosed a large area in the heart of the city. A spacious building with a raised plinth existed inside the complex with water streams and fountains extending to the entrance. The area around it was filled with trees and was enclosed by a compound wall.

It is said  that the compound wall had 12 entrances. The Baradari now houses the Doaba club in the old building.
