 Shitla Devi Mandir

Located in Raja Mohalla and constructed by SMT. VIMLAWATI UMMAT on a well that existed there, SHITLA MANDIR is an important temple for the Ummats

History: Legend has it that a mistry staying in Ummaton Mohalla was childless. He prayed that he would get a well constructed if a child is born to him. He was blessed with a child after a few years and he promptly got a well dug. The area around the well came to be known as Raja Mohalla after his wife, Raja Rani.

But after piped water started in the area, the well fell into disuse. People started throw refuse into the well. Repeated pleas fell on deaf ears. One night, Shitla Mata and Varun Devta came in the dreams of SMT. VIMLA WATI DEVI who had come from Burma and resided near the well.

In the dream, Varun Devta showed his head to SMT VIMLA WATI and told, ‘See the condition of our head due to the things thrown in the well.’ On being told that all the entreaties are falling into deaf ears, the Lord said, ‘Get the well covered and no one will come in your way or harm you. You can start the work immediately.’ SMT VIMLA WATI called the masons the next morning and the work commenced immediately with the money she had. Donations started pouring in and Rs. 10,000 was collected on the first day itself. Girders were put on the well and a temple was constructed on top of it.

A sculptor had made the idols. Once again, SMT VIMLA WATI got a dream and was asked to have the idols installed after the required rituals. The temple was opened to public on 1st Jan., 1987.

It is one of the most revered temples for the Ummats and puja is offered here along with other religious places before any religious event. If any child suffers from ‘measles’ he is brought here and prayers are offered.
