Nawanshahr

The Town

Nawanshahr had been the Tehsil headquarters and an important town of Jallundar district since British captured Punjab. Recently it was declared a district with its headquarters at Nawanshahr town. Presently it is a bustling town with a population of approximately one lakh. The History of Nawanshahr dates back to early 14th century. Nawanshahr said to have been built by the Nausher Khan, an Afghan military chief in the time of Ala-uddin-khilji (1295- 1316 A.D) by a side of a lake. He constructed five forts known as Havelis in the city, the remains of these Havelis still exsits.
